People over 65 who exercise regularly are exceptional. They’re exceptional
because, unlike most of us, they know that to enjoy their later years they must
move and keep moving. Research shows that we can’t stop the clock, but we
CAN slow down the aging process. Many so-called age-related diseases are
actually associated more with inactivity than with aging.

All my senior clients have at least a few medical issues such as heart disease,
diabetes, fibromyalgia, arthritis, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, cancer,
neuromotor problems, hearing or vision loss, asthma, or a combination of these
conditions. After they receive medical clearance to exercise I design a program
that takes into account their specific needs. For example, I give my arthritic
clients exercises that strengthen the muscles around the joints to reduce stress
on the joints. In some cases I work closely with physical therapists and physicians in preparing an appropriate exercise program.

At age 75, I’m considered “a youngster” by most of my senior clients. I started
serious training when I turned 65. It took time to learn how to exercise properly and I made a lot of mistakes that a personal trainer could have helped me to avoid. I also had 45 pounds to lose. Then I decided to reinvent myself. My children had become adults so I became certified as a personal trainer and my life changed.

There are two good reasons to work with a fitness professional. One is to get the
maximum benefit from exercise and the other is to minimize the possibility of
injury while exercising. Your current level of fitness is not important. What’s
important is that you know your current level and that’s where a personal trainer
comes in. He or she will devise a program tailored to YOUR goals and YOUR
life style.
